Owens Corning Technician in Granville, Ohio

Location: Granville, Ohio - United States PURPOSE OF THE JOB As a technician on the Roofing Science & Technology team, you will actively participate in a collaborative team focused on testing asphalt materials for roofing and paving applications. You will provide testing support for the Asphalt Innovation Team, and will be working primarily in the laboratory with analytical tools such as High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to characterize asphalt chemistry and weathering. Your additional duties may include measurement of asphalt on the Capillary Rheometer and Dynamic Shear Rheometer, as well as preparation of filled and unfilled asphalt coating samples for execution of additional routine testing. You will work primarily at the Science and Technology Center in Granville and occasionally travel to the Asphalt Testing Laboratory in Summit, IL as well as our other roofing, asphalt, or components production facilities in the United States. You may be asked to run mimic equipment and develop new test methods for performance validation. Safe working practices will be critical to success. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Chemical Analysis of Asphalt Prepare samples, including dissolution of asphalt in solvents and other preparatory methods typical of chemical laboratories. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot HPLC equipment. Perform analysis of HPLC spectra and record data accurately, providing timely, quality results to the requestor. Maintain an organized inventory of samples before and after testing. Respond quickly to shifting testing priorities based on the needs of the business. Asphalt Testing Support Performs standard and nonstandard laboratory testing of asphalt materials (ASTM, AASHTO, and other methods), including rheological testing Supports and invents new test method development as needed Fully understands requestor requirements and provides trustworthy data on asphalt properties Accurately records measurements and data along with relevant observations for the requestor, and provides quality results to satisfy customer needs and expectations Identifies gaps in laboratory technology and recommend improvements Utilizes standard analytical equipment include rulers, thickness gauges, scales, ovens, presses, and related equipment Interfaces with other lab organizations for material characterization including the Roofing Test Lab, Mechanical Characterization Lab, and Analytical Lab JOB REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in science and engineering is required, preferably in Chemistry, Material Science, or Engineering. 10-15% travel required, with the position based in Granville, OH PREFERRED EXPERIENCE : Prior experience handling and testing asphalt and asphalt blends Prior experience with chemical and physical analytical tools, especially including high pressure liquid chromatography, dynamic shear rheology, and capillary rheology KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Hands-on aptitude and flexibility to support the changing needs of customers, and agility to redirect work to the top business needs. Comfortable working with asphalt and associated raw materials, operating laboratory instrumentation, and mechanical equipment, as well as measuring/mixing devices.
