Position summary:

Under the direction of and in coordination with AEP’s Associate General Counsel/Chief Tax Counsel, this position involves representing and advising AEP regulated and unregulated business operations on federal, state and local tax matters.

Representation includes providing legal advice to management and the AEP Tax Department on a variety of issues concerning tax issues arising in the electric utility industry relating to the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity including: Review, analyze, and interpret laws, regulations and judicial and administrative decisions and other legal materials affecting matters relating to AEP’s operations and interests; handling federal and state income tax audits, transaction tax audits and state property tax appeals; representing the AEP business units in federal and state administrative hearings; review and report on federal, state and local tax legislation; performing tax research and planning aspects of merger, acquisition and disposition transactions.

This position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to exercise sound legal judgment to provide timely advice, the ability to adapt to frequently changing work priorities, strong listening, advocacy and negotiation skills, and an ability to work independently of direct supervision while still being aligned with the goals of the Legal Department. Familiarity with the electric utility industry is preferred.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: J.D. required. Admitted to practice in appropriate jurisdiction(s).

Experience: Requires at least five years’ experience with a law firm, government agency or corporate legal/tax department.

Senior Counsel (Tax)

Education: J.D. required. Admitted to practice in appropriate jurisdiction(s).

Experience: Requires at least seven years’ experience with a law firm, government agency or corporate legal/tax department.
