Ohio University Communications Specialist III, Media Engagement in Athens, Ohio
University Communications and Marketing is seeking a knowledgeable, organized and disciplined individual who is equipped to refine existing media engagement tactics while concurrently exploring and initiating new communications opportunities.
Under the supervision of University Communications and Marketing’s Media Relations Manager, the Communications Specialist III, Media Engagement, will work to implement media relations initiatives that align with, and support, Ohio University’s mission, vision and goals. The successful candidate will work to raise the profile of the University through targeted media engagements geared toward raising the national prominence of the University and promoting the achievements of our students, faculty and staff, OHIO’s academic excellence and its commitment to being the best transformative student-centered learning experience in America.
This role will regularly track and report their outreach efforts via the use of numerous media reporting and tracking tools like Cision, Google Analytics and more. They will also utilize such data to assess past execution efforts and share opportunities to introduce new, or enhance existing, communications strategies.
The position serves as the team leader for crafting and executing OHIO’s media pitching strategy and maintaining its Faculty Experts Directory and Media Newsroom. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and editing a broad spectrum of media pitching content in support of numerous communications outreach and engagement initiatives; they are responsible for providing strategic communications counsel to colleagues throughout the University when deemed necessary.
This role will also lead the event planning efforts of the annual Faculty Newsmakers Gala, which is University Communications and Marketing’s showcase event to celebrate OHIO faculty newsmakers who made headlines during the previous calendar year.
As is expected of all UCM personnel, the Communications Specialist III will deal professionally with numerous University stakeholders, external sources and constituencies. Adherence to University policies, the Public Relations Society of America’s Code of Ethics, AP Style and state and federal laws is required.
• A bachelor’s degree in journalism, media relations or a related communications field is required. • At least 3 years of experience in developing or implementing a media pitching program is required, with at least one year of experience in media relations. • Demonstrated knowledge of various social media tools, Drupal (or an equivalent content management system), Adobe Creative Suite (or equivalent design tool) and Microsoft Office products. • Demonstrated ability working with metrics, analysis, and reporting tools (Cision or an equivalent PR monitoring tool), with the ability to analyze this data and make decisions related to marketing and communication efforts. • A firm grasp of writing and editing for AP Style • Proven event planning experience of at least 1 year, including the marketing and managing of events. • Excellent writing, editing and interpersonal skills. • An ability to work on a wide range of projects simultaneously, often under tight deadlines. • A commitment to teamwork, and the ability to interact with those from diverse backgrounds. • A history of sound news judgement.
• Prior experience in a higher education environment, including researching and analyzing trends/practices in higher education communications. • A knowledge of multimedia content creation, specifically audio/video production and editing. • Ability to plan and execute effective social media campaigns on multiple platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. • Knowledge of online survey authoring tools.
Note: An online or print journalism portfolio will be required in the event that they are selected for an initial interview; a demonstration of each candidate’s talents in media pitching strategy and communications best practices will be required in the event that they are invited for a second interview.
